Chapter XI

Gareth and Jules entered Fox’s bedroom, and each sat with a large crystal glass of brandy. Jules needed one after having been jolted at hearing Corina scream. Her screams at him before had been ones of rage at his behavior. The ones tonight had been pure fear, and his heartbeat had just begun to slow down.

“I think I’ve aged ten years tonight.” Jules spoke softly and slowly shook his head. “Does that happen very often?”

“No, only when she is under stress. Then the nightmares begin again.”

“What stress is she under right now? To me, she seems like everything is as expected.”

Foxdown looked at his friend for a moment. I wonder. Corina has not had a nightmare in over a year. Until Jules’ visit. Could her nightmare be related to their altercation in any way? Fox took a sip of his brandy, then another and paused. Sighing, he began telling Lord Brookton what had happened to Corina when she was a little girl.

“Corina has always been a little big for her age. When she was eight-years-old, she looked twelve. At that time, there was a man in the neighborhood assaulting young servant girls and any other woman caught alone. It was late evening, and Corina was chasing one of the pups who headed into the woods when the reprobate caught her. Two of my brothers and I were heading toward the stable to talk to the head groom when we heard her scream and ran to her aid. We found him on top of her with his pants down preparing to…” Gareth’s face reddened, and he waved one hand through the air, obviously uncomfortable “…anyway, we caught him before he raped her.”

At his friend’s words, Jules jumped up and began to pace, running his hands through his hair. “My God, I hope you killed the bastard.”

“Hmph. We were definitely in a murderous mood and probably would have killed him but for Thomas. My youngest brother was the voice of reason and said even if John Sebastian was the rapist, we would be guilty of murder, and we didn’t need blood on our hands as well as dealing with the magistrate.”

Outraged, Jules snarled, “He hurt Corina. It would have been worth it to cut his heart out.”

“Yes…there would have been a degree of satisfaction, but we were only a duke’s sons. Possibly, it would have afforded us some protection. Nevertheless, it still would have been wrong.” The look on Fox’s face, though, indicated it might have been worth it. Taking another sip, he continued. “We were not the law. However, we did exact retribution, and there were no more rapes. He had threatened all the women by telling them he would take an ax and murder their entire families if they said one word. Unfortunately, although he was a suspect several times, nothing could be proven as he always had his friends alibi for him. So, he continued on for quite a while until every woman in the area was terrified to be alone.
